REI Awards Bike grant to Hillsboro Parks & Recreation FOR NEW READY RIDERS ROCK YOUTH PROGRAM

Hillsboro, Oregon Thanks to a grant of $4700 from REI, Hillsboro Parks & Recreation has acquired ten new Novara mountain bikes and will implement a new bicycle program for youth this month.. The new Ready Riders Rock! program is targeted to teens and focuses on the basic skills of biking, bicycle safety and rules of the road, and taking care of your bike.

Hillsboro Parks & Recreation is pleased to introduce this new program to the wide variety of programs it currently offers to youth in the community. The first class for 10-18 year olds starts Feb 23rd. The class is held on four Saturdays for two hours, 9-11 a.m. at the Gordon Faber Recreation Complex. The second session begins May 10th. This program will also be implemented at the schools during The Zone after-school program and also during the summer session.

Ready Riders Rock (R3) will not only prepare young cyclists with proper riding skills, how to take care of their bicycle, and for the rules of the road and bike safety; it will instill a sense of achievement through bike maintenance, physical fitness, and awareness for the environment. R3 will inspire the young to fitness!³ says Dr. Bud Harris, program instructor and avid bicyclist.

The community will benefit from this grant and Hillsboro Parks & Recreation’s continued partnership with REI because it allows them to launch valuable youth bicycling education, which is a perfect fit with the wide range of recreation, nature and adventure opportunities Hillsboro Parks & Recreation offers, says Commununity Resources Manager Corinne Bloomfield,.
