About
The Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports consists of two entities: a council that serves at the pleasure of the Governor and secondly, a 501(c)(3) organization called the Oregon Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports Foundation.
History
Governor Roberts created the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports by Executive Order 94-05 in 1994.
Premise
Involvement in physical activities, proper nutrition and sport programs serves to enrich lives and improve the health of families and individuals throughout Oregon’s communities and schools.
Vision
To improve the health and well being of every Oregonian.
Mission
- To actively promote the preventative and lifelong benefits associated with physical fitness and proper nutrition for Oregonians.
- To be aware of the physical condition of Oregonians.
- To encourage, recognize and promote sports for Oregonians and for Oregon.
Goals
- To promote to Oregon’s families, individuals, schools and communities, the value and societal benefits of the preventative programs: fitness, nutrition and sports.
- To encourage the establishment of physical fitness evaluation of Oregonians with special emphasis on youth.
- To promote sports related activities for everyone as an avenue for improved fitness, with special emphasis on youth and seniors.
- To assess, determine and recommend fitness, nutrition and sports programs beneficial for Oregon’s citizens. Special emphasis again placed on Oregon’s youth.
- To establish sports and fitness committees that may recognize individual and/or group achievement and/or programs in fitness or sport.
- To educate the public that proper fitness and nutrition is an economically sound philosophy.
- To encourage the involvement of every Oregonian, regardless of age or ability, to participate in fitness, nutrition and/or sport programs.
- To promote current and lifelong benefits of physical activities, nutritional education and sport programs in Oregon’s schools.
