OGC Banner Seen at Summer Olympics Site!
By Charlie | June 18, 2010
The Oregon Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports banner hung proudly from May 20th-23rd, 2010 during the 40th United States Masters Swimming (USMS) National Championships which were held in Atlanta, Georgia at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center, which was the site of the 1996 Summer Olympic Games. It was also the unofficial banner of the Oregon Masters team as we did not have our official OMS banner at the meet. Nearly 2,000 swimmers competed at this meet, which included 35 OMS swimmers who made the long trip to Atlanta, with ORGovFit Chair Charlie Helm among them. The Oregon team finished a surprising 6th place-ahead of several larger teams. Most of us swam personal best times at this incredible facility. About 12 former and current Olympic team members also competed at this meet. I was able to swim warm ups in the same lane with 1984 gold medalist Rowdy Gaines-who is also in my age group, and 2008 gold medalist Cullen Jones. It was a fun and rewarding trip that the Oregon Team won’t forget.
